Herbert Oster

Preparing for emigration

In 1937 his work permit was revoked. Unable to work he looked desperately for a way to leave Germany.

He tried to get visas to the USA and South Africa but they were not giving immigration permission, however he heard through an old friend from the football team that a country in South America was giving visas. He went to the consulate in Cologne (Koeln) and received three visas to immigrate to Colombia (South America). At that time it was still permissible to leave Germany.

He had planned on leaving in February 1938 but one day in November 1937 a friend from the football team came to him and told that the next day the Nazis where coming for him.

„We presume that it is known that the jew Oster, Muehlenstraße 24 intents to emigrate from Germany. Furthermore it is known, that Oster  has a habit of  paying lately. There is a danger that the Jew might have disappeared  some time in the future without having payed his financial obligations to the state. In order to take away this way of action, I ask the administration authorities responsible for his emigration, to inform us. So that  we can act in time."
