Herzogenstr. 8Emil Kern was a trader. He was the father of Elise Cohen and was married to Caroline Sonnheim who was twelve years older than him. The couple are not named in the list of the Goch Jewish congregation dated 1st of April 1938. However that they were no longer resident in Goch is noted in the subsequent list dated 1st July 1939. Caroline and Emil Kern most likely returned to Edenkoben (Pfalz), as they were transported from there on 22nd October 1940 during the Wagner-Bürckel transportation with 6000 other Jews from Saar-Pfalz & Baden to the Vichy-French internment camp at Gurs. The journey via Avignon and Toulouse lasted three days and four nights. Many elderly people died during the journey. Caroline Kern (A”H) was 73 years old at the time – passed away one and a half months after reaching Gurs. Her elderly husband Emil (A”H) was later deported from Gurs to Auschwitz where he was murdered. |
