The story of her aliyah and life in a religious kibbutz in Palestine (Eretz Israel)

  Pos1

Voss-Strasse 42

Margarete Oppenheimer was born on 9th January 1904, the eighth & youngest child of Aron & Friederike Oppenheimer. She attended the Jewish School in Goch - this school gave secular & religious education to Jewish children aged from 6/7 up to 14 years of age.

Like her brother Arthur, from the 1920's on, Margarete belonged to a Zionist youth movement which received agricultural instruction on a farm in Rodges near Fulda. Such training was intended to give the young members a sound preparation for their future life in Eretz Israel. They not only gained knowledge of agriculture and housekeeping, but also learned Hebrew. So it was that Margarete subsequently arrived, trained & willing as a member of this Rodges group, in Palestine during 1935. At first they were accommodated at Petach Tiqwa (east of Tel Aviv). In 1940 the group relocated to the Kvutzat Yavne (*) settlement. Margarete's Hebrew name was Bat Sheva.

Margarete married Manfred Hirchenberg. The couple were blessed with two daughters, Channa (born 1938) and Rachel (born 1943). Some years later Margarete and Manfred divorced. Margarete retained nonetheless a close & loving relationship to her daughters and her grandchildren.

Margarete was a woman of intelligence and culture, a lover of art and music. She was much involved in artistic enterprises. Near to her house she created a garden which enchanted all who saw it.

(*)"Kvutza" refers to a special type of kibbutz - a closed religious society operating upon co-operative principles. This type of kibbutz has sadly disappeared over the intervening decades.
